GIF Conversion

Convert animated GIFs to smaller MP4 or WebP files

This is a Pro feature. Activate your license to use it.

Animated GIFs are notoriously large files. A 5-second GIF can easily be 5–10MB. Compresso can convert them to MP4 video or animated WebP, which are dramatically smaller.

Requirements

GIF to MP4 conversion requires the ffmpeg binary on your server. GIF to WebP uses cwebp. Check Compresso > Dashboard > System Status to verify availability.

Conversion Options

GIF to MP4

Converts animated GIFs to MP4 video files. MP4 is typically 80–90% smaller than the original GIF. When GIF delivery is enabled, Compresso automatically replaces <img> tags pointing to GIFs with <video> tags in your page content.

GIF to Animated WebP

Converts animated GIFs to animated WebP files. Savings are typically 30–50%. The WebP version is served using the same delivery method as your regular WebP images.

Enabling GIF Conversion

  1. Go to Compresso > Settings
  2. Enable Convert GIFs to MP4, Convert GIFs to WebP, or both
  3. Enable GIF Delivery to automatically serve the converted versions on your site

Bulk Converting Existing GIFs

To convert GIFs already in your media library, use Tools > Convert GIFs on the settings page.

Static (non-animated) GIFs are handled by the regular image optimization pipeline and won't be converted to MP4.
